Continuing the crate-digging, this time with sketches and photos of stuff from my time at CCS, mostly 3rd and 4th year.
First up: Honda city car, spring 2002 (sponsored project for Honda’s CA studio):

Vehicle Packaging, 2002
I loved this class. Taking terrible vehicle packages, redesigning
exteriors to meet legal requirements whie retaining specific parts of
the chassis and interior.
Sketching and doing tape drawings. Tape drawings are my favorite things. I banged that one out on the wall in the hour before class started, and by the time I was like halfway done, I looked back and realized that I had an audience.
First two images are redesigning the Chevrolet Malibu (2001). Second two are a VW 2L car— 2 liters of gas/100KM.
University of Michigan Dearborn Interior, 2002.
The three UofMD interns the previous year designed the exterior of a
lightweight world car. This was my proposal for the interior: a dash
built of kenaf, with a large central info screen, and easliy
reconfigurable for left- or right- hand drive. The seating
configurations are like Lego: four captain’s chairs, a storage/table
unit, a chauffer seat, all simple, reconfigurable, and sustainable.

The “Chrome Project” was a junior-year milestone at CCS for a number of
years. Our year’s theme was retro luxury sport. I went for a battleship Renault.

The main instructor for this studio hated the fact that I came in 6 weeks late (I was at my first internship, in Austria, and delayed a bit by 9/11), hated the idea and the design, but, fuck you, dude, it got me my internship at Ford’s Living Legends Studio, so I must not have been too wrong. Making the fabric roof was a bitch. Mixing the right colors was a bitch. Figuring out the matte paint was a bitch. Compounded by the fact that I got food poisoning from the school cafeteria 2 days before the model was due, and I was puking in trash cans.
I wish I had a photo of the tape drawing; I thought I’d taken some, back then. I did it on a big sheet of plexi over the scale drawing print.
Anyway, if you made it this far, thanks for taking the trip with me. While I’m banging out some new work, and writing more proposals, I end up digging back through stuff that’s...

Man, you are incredibly talented. I really love that Honda runabout, especially when you show how it crosses over with a quad/ATV. Really takes ideas from all over Honda’s spectrum!

Wow. If I ever achieve my bucket list goal of learning how to create car bodies with fiberglass, I’ll have to talk to you. Those are some cool designs! I especially like your retro Renault concept.

Thanks, glad you caught that. The project was for an entry-level, college-student first car, and I thought that a 1-3 seat cargo van x scooter was a good solution, and I pulled from Honda’s scooter and ATV stuff for the driving position. The rear seats would fold up into the wall, giving a bunch of cargo space for the inevitable moving.
